The Goth Cowboy of Pōneke, the Synth-Soaked Crooner of Newtown - Hemi Hemingway makes romantically-charged indie/alternative pop which draws from the '50s and '60s, '80s post-punk and New Romantic aesthetics, and garage rock.
The name is a nod to his Māori heritage, and acts as a way for Hemingway to connect to an identity that he was raised apart from. After cutting his teeth in the New Zealand alt-country scene and later the London post-punk and garage-rock scenes, the project of Hemi Hemingway began in the first of London’s lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic.
His songwriting - delivered in a baritone that continually shifts between vulnerable and sultry - explores desire, heartbreak, relocation and self-discovery, while more recently touching on political issues such as indigenous rights, colonisation and racial discrimination.
